CHAPTERS
SOCM chapters offer local citizens a place to meet, discuss their concerns, and plan actions.  The chapters support SOCM statewide projects and also have their own local projects.  SOCM began as a local organization, and today's local chapters can draw on over 30 years of grassroots organizing skillsThey can be very effective in bringing about change in a community.

SOCM chapters are organized by area.  This may be a county, part of a county, or a multi-county area.  They have been organized in three different ways:
1 - An existing organization applies to SOCM to become a chapter.
2 - A group of citizens dealing with a "hot" local issue applies to become a SOCM chapter.
3 - The SOCM Board decides that a chapter is needed in a specific area for political  balance.

Each chapter has its own chapter chair (facilitator) and is assigned one staff organizer to assist the chapter in local efforts and to help coordinate the chapter's work on statewide issues.   The amount of organizer time is based on priorities assigned by the Board.

You can be an active member of SOCM without being a member of any chapter.  In fact, most of our members are at-large members.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF CHAPTERS
Each active chapter must have a minimum of 30 members, agree to support SOCM statewide issues, and support the organization with local fund raising events.   The SOCM board sets goals for fund raising and priorities for SOCM-wide issues.  Individual members may participate in any local activities and join any SOCM statewide issue committee as they see fit.  Support chapters may have fewer than 30 members and still be active in statewide issues, but they do not hold regular meetings.

Each chapter has one voting representative and one or more non-voting alternate representatives on the board.   At least one of these representatives is expected to attend the 6 board meetings each year.  (The alternate becomes a voting member in the absence of the representative.)

Chapters meet monthly or at such other intervals as they determine appropriate.  Chapter meetings are open to the public.
