A SOCM Maury county chapter was formed in 1999.  Over the next years key issues identified include sponsoring activities and workshops promoting unity and racial tolerance, encouraging participation in dismantling racism workshops, and addressing issues of discrimination in funding public facilities like parks in African-American communities.

In 2007 the Maury chapter went inactive, but a new surge of energy and emerging of new leaders has sparked an effort to re-activate the chapter.

Those involved in reactivating the chapter met in December 2008 to discuss issues they could organize around and listed such areas as crime, drugs, youth, and education. Johnny Farris, who lives in Maury County and serves as an at-large delegate on the SOCM Board, says, “We believe if we can reach youth through education, it would reduce some of these other things such as not being able to get into college because you can’t get help to pass a standardize test such as the ACT.”

Maury County membership is approaching the thirty members required to reactivate the chapter and members hope to have reactivation approved in spring of 2009.
