CURRENT WORK  The Chapter is currently working to encourage the City of Cookeville to take a more active role in controlling non-point source pollution in Pigeon Roost Creek through better planning and stormwater treatment.   The Chapter gradually became more involved with the clean up effort after beginning an ongoing project to label storm sewer drains and educate the public as to how important it is to keep these water ways free from contamination.   Chapter members believe that Cookeville can lead the way in controlling non-point source pollution with the help of active and informed residents.

Among the many current activities of this chapter, members continues to oppose the extension of Corridor J, SR -451, as TDOT plans to push forward the road.

The Roaring River Chapter of SOCM has added a significant contribution to SOCM's statewide work, such as tax reform and forestry, and continues to do so by organizing in-district meetings with legislators and media events.   The Chapter is also adding to the organization wide work by working to pass a resolution in Jackson County calling for the release of funds from the Federal Abandoned Mine Lands Fund, so that money can be used to create jobs and clean up old mines.

HISTORY/PAST ACCOMPLISHMENTS
SOCM members protest against tdOT
Chapter members encourage people to come to an event to oppose Corridor J.

The chapter joined SOCM in 1996, and has been one of the most active SOCM chapters since that time.   The members were quite active in SOCM's successful fight to protect the lands around Fall Creek Falls State Park from strip mining, and in 1999 they worked with local citizens to fight the extension of Corridor J. into a loop highway around the northern part of Putnam County.   They also helped set up the Cookeville Area Residents Association (CARA) that grew out of that issue. Several chapter members are on CARA's steering committee.   The chapter assisted CARA in turning out over 500 citizens opposed to the Corrider J project at each of three public meetings held by the TN Dept. of Transportation in 1999 and 2000.

The chapter publishes an eight page monthly newsletter and is the only SOCM Chapter with its own WEB SITE.   Be sure to visit their web site for details of chapter activities and interesting links to other environmental and social action groups.

The Roaring River Chapter has speakers on environmental issues at most of its monthly chapter meetings.   They often co-host speakers with the local chapter of the Sierra Club.
