People working together for social, economic and environmental justice in Tennessee
|
SOCM MISSION STATEMENT
|
THE MISSON OF SOCM
is to assist Tennessee residents to protect, defend and improve the quality of life in their communities and across the state.
From organizational roots in rural coal counties of the Cumberland
Mountains and Cumberland Plateau, SOCM is working toward environmental,
economic and social justice for all Tennessee residents.
This includes stopping the devastation caused by mining, addressing
environmental problems encountered in other forms of development, working
for fair taxation, overcoming social discrimination, and working on other
local and statewide issues of concern to its members.
SOCM is a member-run organization which encourages civic involvement
among Tennessee people so that they may have a greater voice in
determining their future.

SOCM VALUE STATEMENT
|
WE BELIEVE
that each of us has an inherent power and right to affect the course of our lives and surroundings.
We are committed to developing and using this power to improve the quality of life in our communities.
We believe we have a right to know about and have a voice in developments which affect us.
Those who engage in enterprises, commerce and industry have a responsibility to be accountable to the communities in which they operate, as do politicians and all government officials.
Recognizing the dignity and rights of all people, we work together across lines of age, race, and income to work for social, environmental, and economic justice.
We believe there is strength in organization -- in people working together to protect their rights, seeking to improve their communities and working for the common good.

SOCM VISION STATEMENT
|
WE ENVISION
a Tennessee where people of diverse backgrounds are empowered through community action and leadership development to achieve change that improves their quality of life by addressing issues of environmental, economic and social justice.
SOCM envisions a Tennessee with clean air, clean water, decent housing, adequate food, affordable health care, good educational opportunities, a fair tax system, and a living wage for all people.
We envision a Tennessee where all people are treated fairly and equally across lines of age, race, and income.
We see a Tennessee where the mountains, forests, open spaces, and communities are preserved and protected and where corporations and all public officials are held accountable to the people.
