People working together for social, economic and environmental justice in Tennessee
|
What is SOCM?
|
|
|
SOCM IS PEOPLE...
|
...people of all ages, income levels, races, religions and political viewpoints who come together and organize to gain the power to make change happen.
...people standing up for their rights, working together for better laws and fair, consistent
enforcement of existing laws.
...people developing their leadership abilities as they confront problems and work for improvements in their communities.
...people working for a fair and just society in which the dignity of each person is respected and all people have the right to
participate in decisions that affect them.
|
|
TAKING ACTION...
|
...when
two hundred people show up at a hearing for a strip mine permit to object
to potential damage to their homes and loss of their drinking
water; ...or when members travel four hours to the state capital in
large groups to tell their local representatives why a law protecting our
homes and jobs is important; ...or when 400 members turn out for a
meeting to challenge a poorly done environmental impact study by the
government, and insist that it be redone.
Members do research to develop campaigns for action. They form coalitions
with other groups in the state, region, and nation for
more political clout and organize voter registration drives and voter
education campaigns around issues they feel are important.
