People working together for social, economic and environmental justice in Tennessee
|
SOCM Youth:
SOCM members, ages 13 through 18
|
|
NOTE:
For several years SOCM had a very active and vital youth group. At the present time these young people
have all "graduated" into SOCM adult members.
The SOCM youth committee can be reactivated at any time that there is a sufficient number of youth
ages 13 to 18 who want to become involved.
|
About this committee:
The SOCM Youth Project is a place for young people to come together
to work on common issues. Here they learn how to organize to have their
opinions heard. They learn many new things, both about SOCM and from each other, while having fun at the same time.
SOCM youth plan their own activites and schedules at youth retreats.
They find an amazing "sameness" in their concerns even though they come from different races and different parts of Tennessee.
They develop their own action plans and can become a part of the larger SOCM decision making process.
Because many of the young people come from different counties, the meetings are held at weekend Youth Retreats rather than at monthly meetings.
We invite you to join & learn more about SOCM youth!

Words from former SOCM Youth members:
I joined when a friend asked me to go to a youth retreat. I wasn't sure at
first, but I went and had a good time. I used to have a little bit of a
hard time talking to new people, but by being part of the youth group, I've
gotten better at communicating and have a whole new group of friends. This
was my first time being a part of a multi-racial group and I was surprised
at how well everyone got along.......Adam: Columbia, TN
My parents have been SOCM members for awhile and I have gone to local
Chapter meetings with them. But there was not much for youth to do. With
the Youth Project, I get to meet other SOCM youth and learn about other
cultures. At the retreats we do fun things and we also have workshops and
learn about organizing. We are going to be taking on service projects and
starting our own organizing campaign.......Christina: Jellico, TN
